How to measure ring size: Tips and tricks for finding the perfect fit, including an all-important ring size chart

Are you planning to surprise your significant other with a beautiful diamond engagement ring but have no idea about the ring size? Don't worry, you are not alone! Measuring ring size can be quite tricky, but we are here to guide you through it. In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about how to measure ring size accurately.

Why is it important to measure ring size?

Before we jump into how to measure ring size, let's talk about why it's essential to get the right size. A ring that is too big may fall off, get lost, or cause injury, while a ring that is too small may be uncomfortable to wear and even restrict blood flow in your finger. Therefore, it's crucial to measure ring size correctly to ensure that the ring fits comfortably and securely on the finger.

What are the most popular ways to measure ring size?

There are several methods for measuring ring size, some with and some without the knowledge of the recipient.

Measure with a Ring Sizer

One of the easiest and most accurate ways to measure ring size is by using a ring sizer. You can either request a free ring sizer from Quality Diamonds or visit us at one of our showrooms (or any jeweller!) who can measure your finger for free. A standard ring sizer is a set of metal rings of various sizes that you can slide on your finger until you find the perfect fit. Once you have determined your ring size, you can use it to buy your engagement ring online or at a jeweller, like Quality Diamonds :-)

Measure with a Piece of String or Paper

If you don't have access to a ring sizer, you can use a piece of string or paper to measure your ring size. First, wrap the string or paper (no wider than 14mm wide) around the base of your finger and mark where the string or paper overlaps. Then, measure the length of the string or paper in millimetres with a ruler. Use the ring size chart below to determine your ring size based on the measurement.

Use an Existing Ring

If you have a ring that fits your finger perfectly, you can use it to determine your ring size. Place the ring on a ring size chart and find the size that matches the inside diameter of the ring. Make sure the ring you use for measuring is similar in width and style to the ring you plan to buy.

How do I get a ring size without them knowing?

Trying to find the correct finger size without someone knowing is quite tricky to get 100% accurate, so we'd advise one of the following:

Use another ring they wear

If you can borrow a ring your partner already wears from their jewellery box, this will be a good indication of what size to go for. It would also be helpful if you knew what finger they wore that ring on; this way, your jeweller will be able to judge what size their Engagement finger will be.

How does their Engagement finger compare to your fingers?

If you have an idea of how their finger measures up compared to yours, this may prove useful in giving an estimate of what size to choose. For example, if you know her Engagement finger is a similar size to your little finger, your jeweller can then measure your little finger, and work out a size guide from there.

Ask their friends

You may find your partner has already had their finger measured, and their friends know their size. If you’re brave enough to ask them, and trust they won’t spill the beans, why not ask their friends for advice, as you may find they already know the answer to your question?

Tips for Measuring Ring Size

  • Measure your ring size at the end of the day when your fingers are the largest.
  • Measure the finger that you plan to wear the ring on.
  • If you're between sizes, it's better to go up a size.
  • Measure your finger a few times to ensure accuracy.
