All You Need to Know About Men’s Wedding Rings
January 02 2023
At a wedding ceremony, it is customary for the man and woman to exchange rings. However, this has not always been the case. Men's wedding rings have only been commonly worn since the Second World War. Since then, their popularity has surged with there now being a huge selection of men's rings available. Here's everything you need to know about wedding rings for men.
Traditionally, men's wedding rings have been made from gold but with the changes in fashion and styles, other metals have become more popular. Titanium, silver and white gold are now considered more masculine materials for rings to be made from and are all extremely durable materials for a ring that is to be worn every day.
Although many women's wedding rings contain diamonds or other gemstones, this is usually not typical for men's rings. They are usually simple metal bands, occasionally with an engraving. They can be made with small gemstones if it is the man's preference, but this is much less common.
It's a common misconception that men's and women's wedding rings have to match. This is obviously unviable as two people may have completely different tastes. It's best to choose rings that suit each person's style, which they'll be proud to wear for the rest of their lives.
While it's traditional for the man to choose and purchase the women's engagement ring, there is no such tradition for men's wedding rings. Couples usually prefer to choose their wedding rings together.
When did men start wearing wedding rings?
The tradition of both bride and groom wearing wedding rings only began in WW2, the men started wearing them to remember their wives back home. Another reason why wedding rings were traditionally exchanged, was to prove that the man was financially stable enough to support his bride - where he first gifts her with precious metal.
The Ring Itself
Men’s wedding rings can range from 2mm to 8mm in width, though the width that suits the groom will depend on variables like what he prefers and the size of his hands.
